Actually, Lincoln was not the first Republican president. Thomas Jefferson was. Early on in our republic political history, there were two parties, the Republicans and the Federalists. Eventually, the early Republican party changed its name to the Democratic party.
In the 1850s, the two major parties were the Democrats and the Whigs. The Whigs became the Republican party in time for the 1860 election, in which Lincoln was elected.
